Following a period of harvesting 5.6 hectares of larch infected with Phytophthora, the woodland has now been restocked with a variety of Douglas fir, Sitka spruce and native broadleaves. These are all fully stocked and growing well. Maintenance is excellent and all the trees are visible having been recently hand weeded. The balance of the wood is mainly maturing Douglas fir and native broadleaves including two reasonable areas of 1914 oak planted on the slopes surrounding the hill fort. As we would expect, the combination of climate and quality soils has allowed the Douglas fir to perform very well and with thinning almost completely up to date the future looks good for these crops. These are mainly situated on the more fertile lower slopes surrounding the hill where slope and fertility have allowed the trees to grow very tall. The ancient monument within Burley Wood is described by Natural England as a motte with two baileys and a multivallate hillfort. DESCRIPTION Situated just to the south west of Okehampton in Devon, Burley Wood is a compact woodland occupying the summit and slopes of a conical hill. Slopes are relatively steep and soils are typical for this part of Devon being excellent deep Brown earths overlying shales. The wood therefore offers an excellent site for growing trees as well as a good source of road building stone. Elevation ranges from 450 to 725 feet. Apart from a small area on the northern boundary, the wood is classified as either a Plantation on an ancient Woodland Site (PAWS) or Ancient and Semi-natural woodland (ASNW). Those with a keen interest in native woodland restoration may be interested in taking on this woodland to restore it back to native tree cover. In the future it is likely that grants for restoring ancient woodland may be favourable for this activity as they have been in the past. Access to the woodland is excellent with the stoned access track connecting into a number of internal stoned access tracks. These have been used recently during an operation to remove diseased larch.
